In 1998, the Society for Louisiana Irises named the Special Collections at the Edith Garland Dupre’ Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as the official repository for the records of the organization. The Special Collections also now contain several collections of the papers and related materials of significant figures in the development of the Society.
The designation of the University’s Special Collections as SLI’s repository was very fitting, considering the close relationship between the Society and the University over the years. Ira and Barbara Nelson and Marie Caillet, early leaders of SLI, were on the university faculty. The organization met in Lafayette for many years and held its show in Blackham Coliseum on campus. In fact, due largely to Ira Nelson, a horticulture professor, the library had a sizeable collection of SLI records even before the official designation as a repository.
